The Three Shadows Photography Art Centre in Beijing celebrates its 10th anniversary with the exhibition 40 Years of Chinese Contemporary Photography (1976-2017).
The Three Shadows Photography Art Centre in Beijing celebrates its 10th anniversary with the exhibition 40 Years of Chinese Contemporary Photography (1976-2017) jointly curated by Wu Hung (Harrie A. Vanderstappen Distinguished Service Professor of Art History, East Asian Languages and Civilizations & Curator at the Smart Museum of Art, University of Chicago).
Emerging after the Cultural Revolution, Chinese contemporary photography has now more than forty years of history. The exhibition is divided into four sections – The Rise of Unofficial Photography (1976– 1979), New Wave Photography (1980-1989), Experimental Photography (1990-2006), and The Development of Experimental Photography Organizations (2007-present). Altogether, they provide a comprehensive overview of the work of important Chinese contemporary photographers from the mid-1970s up to the present, as well as related historical materials.
The exhibition is accompanied by a catalogue and symposium, which explore the development of contemporary Chinese photography in great depth.
As part of the special programme for the Three Shadows 10th Anniversary, the Mori Art Museum in Tokyo is also presenting Laboratory for Chinese Contemporary Photography – Three Shadows Photography Art Centre, on view until October 23, 2017.
Located in Beijing’s Caochangdi art district, the Three Shadows Photography Art Centre was China’s first independent organization specializing in contemporary art photography. It was jointly founded by influential Chinese contemporary photographer, RongRong, and his wife, the celebrated Japanese photographer, inri. Since June 2007, Three Shadows has become the country’s premiere platform for high-quality photographic presentation, promotion, discovery and international exchange.
